BadRofl.fr

Welcome to my tiny webring!

Hi, I'm BadRofl, raised by the Internet.

This blog may not go anywhere, there is a lot of works in progress on it.

This blog is basically a place for me to archive my Twitter content before it goes down.

I will also use it to share some of my IRL and VR Photography

Better watch out

What's the worst that could happen?

Update 9: Monthly article, I am back!

Hello there, it has been a while. Ideed I was gone to the land of the Free for a few weeks.

The main objectives of this trip were: Experiencing the 2024 Eclipse, Visiting Kennedy Space Center, Visiting Starbase

The secondaries objectives were: Experiencing the US, Eating food, Chilling

All objectives were completed, a great trip for great memories, but now is the time of archiving all these experiences and share them.

So this is the place where I will be listing the Tertiary Objectives of this trip :

- Sort and process all the pictures taken there (duh)

- Assemble a short best-of album of KSC

- Assemble a short best-of album of the Eclipse

- Assemble a composite picture of the eclipse, showing the phases of the sun/moon and the final result

- Write some articles about how it went and how to travel there, tips n tricks

Once done, rince and repeat with 2023 Japan

In the meantime, continue posting VRC updates, articles and Picture albums, it would be a shame to have built a nice album section and not use it?

Update 8: Monthly article, Albums!

Hello again, after a big month of W-O-R-K, things have finally started to move the right way for this website.

The original BadRofl.fr was a small gallery of my own pictures to share to the world. I has never been the same since "The incident".

Like a phoenix going through fire, the new BadRofl.fr was born : Heavily inspired by z0r.de, a repository of the the best Flash loops the internet had to offer back in 2008.

Then pretty much nothing happened for a while. UNTIL "The Incident".

Good'ol Elon bought Twitter, I mean X, I mean Xitter. The idea of my whole collection of 14 years of quality tweets to disappear pushed me to go AWOL and make my own content repository.

Hello, World, I am blog.badrofl.fr! I may have taken some time to go up to speed, provide content and pictures, but finally, almost 4 years to the day after the fire, a photo gallery is back up again!

I still need to do some mild integration of the actual galleries, but they are functional for the most part and just need some polishing.

For now you can head to the demo gallery there: VR Adventures

And to pay hommage to the first BadRofl.fr, here is a small selection of what you could find there. (until I make the actual galleries)

Until next time! Take care, and don't forget, be robot, be happy.

EyetrackVR : Road to insanity

Ayyy a technical article, this one shall describe and document the process I had to follow to implement eye tracking hardware in my Index headset.

You should probably follow the official guide, but maybe this one shall be useful to someone else as troubleshooting reference.

07 Jan : ESP32s

The most straightforward step of the project, everything worked out the box : Uploading the firmware and connecting it to the PC software with the stock cameras.

12 Jan : IR Cameras

My silly bum did not think reading the documentation was important, you have to LIFT the connector to open it, not pull.

No big deal in the end, nothing broke and I got the ESPs and cameras to work

25 Jan : 3D Printed Parts

JLCPCB did the job, fast and quite cheaply. Parts are fine, but the camera mounts seem to have a little too much leeway in the attaching with the headset lenses. Nothing that can not be fixed, but I have not tried anything yet.

09 Feb : IR Led kit

Soldering is hard, I hope I did not fuck up any parts, my planning was suboptimal and I will have to do some more cables to link all the LEDs

I actually just needed some more practice, once I found the right way to do it.

It should all come together this week, but I won't be able to try it until next weekend, which in a way lets me iron out all problems and take some time to write this fine article.

And it did all come together. It seems to be "working" even tho I need to iron things out with tracking stability and Avatar compatibility.

29 Feb : Resignation

It seems that this article took a while to write. The results have been hindered by the mouth tracking, which is running in parallel and using a different set of parameters which seeeeems to be colliding badly in the runa.

I have decided to put this part on the backburner for now as it is causing me more trouble than actual results. The whole physical assembly is proving to be pushing the limits of the headset and comfort.

On the software side, it seems that sending the video feed over the Index USB cable is causing some artifacting, if not crashing of the whole thing. I still need to be sure that it is, but recent days proved that to be mostly true.

In conclusion, for now, I will need to make VRC handle the eye "pupeetering" on my facetracked avatars, since mouthtracking has proven itself valuable and painless.

Bye bye blind Rofl, you won't be missed.

Be Robot, Be Happy

This is the year 2024, people are building webzones like crazy, what is happening?

It is a hard exercice for me to materialize content out of thin air. But I need to force myself to write a little every week to train my robot hands.

As you are (the two of you) I have been spending tremendous time on VRchat these days. So here is the recap of my week and weekend adventures :

Another party friday featuring the usual crew starting friday at The BoneZone event.

Now you're wondering who the usual crew is, that is going to be a whole different article (maybe).

Dances were had, cheers were sipped and drunks were shamed.

Another saturday, another party, this time starting at the Galathonian Empire, a place of questionable entertainment, but truly a showcase of actual talent.

After a quiet afterparty, we hopped once again to a party venue to shake out our last remaining pieces of decency.

I seem to have found the recipe for not letting myself run out of batteries during the night, but more efforts will have to be made to exhaust the actual controller batteries next time.

Old Rofl is usually falling victim to his own "eepyness" quite early in the night and is pissed about missing half the fun of each night.

On the hardware side of things, I received most the parts needed to finish my full facetracking, expect pictures and details about my totally not scuffed build.

Just learned that I need to pay 12€ of import taxes for 7€ of product T_T

To end this long piece of text : I fucked up my avatar project, by importing another one with common files on top of it.

I guess this is another of these learning experience they say about Unity... will try to fix it fast not to waste too much time.
